|
Frank Auerbach was born in 1931 in Germany, he was sent to
England at an early age to escape the Nazi’s. He was educated in
painting by Bomberg and was associated with the school of London, which
was a close group of figurative painters who chose to work on domestic
or local subjects. Auerbach is notoriously insular in his life he has
around twelve people who model for him on a regular basis, he rarely
does interviews and had to be persuaded to partake in a documentary on
his work. A retrospective of his paintings was held at the Royal Academy
in 2001, he is one of Britain's leading artists and has a huge following
in the USA, his work is found in public and private collections all over
Britain and America.
