Henri Matisse (1869-1954)

Matisse was the master of colour, the Frenchman is without doubt included in any ones top ten artists of the twentieth century, his sensuous control of paint application is apparent in all his masterpieces. Matisse’ exploration of art took him down the path of Lithography, a medium all the more popular in the early part of the twentieth century, what is different about the way Matisse approached his Lithography is clear to see in the finished product, his lithography is as simple as it is brilliant, with just a few lines a face or torso can appear from no where. What is striking is his ability to be so sure about where the next line is going to be, this skill is what makes his work in this medium so appealing. Matisse’ exploration of art took him in a completely different direction from his biggest rival, Picasso. Picasso once said of himself and Matisse "We are like North Pole and South Pole" While Matisse pushed the boundary’s of colour Picasso pushed the boundary’s of form. Both utilised the medium of Lithography but like their art in general , their styles couldn’t be more different.
