Alan Lowndes
British
(1921 - 1978)
Alan Lowndes reputation exceeds the boundary's of the North of England, indeed
England itself as his work has gained respect in America and around the world.
The Artist came from Stockport where his paintings depicted street life much in
the way that Lowry depicted them. The influence of Lowry is strong in his
work but doesn't over whelm it as it has so many others. His Father
famously offered to pay his fare to go to Alderley Edge so he could paint some
nicer scenery than the ones he was painting in Stockport. Lowndes later
painted a series of Maritime scenes based around the St Ives area which has been
an artistic haven and inspiration for many years. The works of Alfred
Wallis seem to have made an impression on Lowndes and inspired him to paint some
of his best work.
Lowndes has attracted collectors from all walks of life but the theatrical
contingent have been particularly strong collectors of his works, Richard
Attenborough, David Tomlinson, the Laughtons, the Steigers to name but a few.
