Paul Nash Biography
|
|
Long admired as one of the outstanding English Landscape painters of the
20th Century, his works are found in all the major art institutions of
Great Britain. Often people have tried to pigeon hole Nash in certain
movements but his work is so vast and so progressive that he is often
burdened with more than one group. Nash' landscapes in the 30's and
40's had him linked with the Neo Romantic movement which boasts some
illustrious members such as, Graham Sutherland, John Piper, John Minton
and Michael Ayrton. Later it was the British Surrealists that Nash
found himself included in and probably the most aptly so.
Educated at the Slade he soon found endless gallery's wanting to include
his work, with the support of Fry and Rothenstein this was a very
exciting time for Nash. The 1920's and 1930's were a period of
experiment for Nash as he moved into a form of semi - abstraction. in
1933 Nash brought together a group of artists called Unit One which
albeit for a short period united surrealist and abstract tendencies.
The group was short lived, in fact it lasted just two years, in it's
short term of fruition it's ranks read like a who's who of British Art
including such names as, Edward Burra, Tristam Hillier, Ben Nicholson,
Barbara Hepworth, Wadsworth and Henry Moore.
