Michael Rothenstein British (1908 -1993)
Michael Rothenstein was born into an influential family in the art world with his father being William Rothenstein the celebrated painter and Principal at the Royal College of Art. Rothenstein suffered a long illness early in his life, but would later recover and eventually move to Essex where he painted landscapes of the rural countryside. When the second World War had finished Rothenstein began his love affair with Print making which lasted almost half a century. Rothenstein gained notoriety as one of the most exciting printmakers of the twentieth century, a subject which constantly appeared was the Cockrel, the first incarnation of this being seen in 1948 on a Colour Lithograph. Two donations of Rothensteins works were made by his widow in 1996 and 1999 to the British Museum who were thrilled to receive works of such accomplishment, the actions of the artists widow have ensured that this great artists work can be enjoyed by the British public for many years to come.
